Perry Public Library's Stowell-Wiles Art Gallery
Loans Paintings to Southold Historical Society
Gallery
News |
From
February to April of 2006, six of our oil paintings by Lemuel M. Wiles (1826-1905) were on
loan to the Southold
Historical Society, located on Long Island's North Fork. Artist Wiles, a native of
West Perry, spent time painting at the eastern end of Long Island, and those works were
highlighted in this exhibit. (For Southold Historical Society's account of the
exhibit, click
here.)
A bonus outcome of this
cooperative endeavor was the publication of a book to accompany the exhibit. Geoffrey K.
Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of the book, entitled Lemuel
Maynard Wiles: American Painter, visited our library and gallery and used many of our
primary resources in his research. The book covers the entire career of Lemuel M. Wiles
and includes photos, end notes, and bibliography. Copies of the book, which is pictured
below left, are available at our library to borrow or to buy. The below right photo shows
our gallery and three of the paintings after their return from Southold.
Perry Public Library's Stowell-Wiles Art
Gallery holds 43 paintings by Lemuel M. Wiles. The collection is the largest in existence
by this artist. |
